The sun had begun to set on Little Saigon, painting the mural bathed walls and traffic control boxes in warmer hues, the clouds splattered against the sky above them. Nick approached this project from a street photographer's perspective. The goal was to get a candid experience of everyday life within these communities. When Nick created flnow he wanted to use photography to portray struggles in independence and tell stories about the people who are creating these places, all while maintaining a lighthearted tone. Oftentimes, stories revolving around minorities suffer from the pitfall category of "the struggle showcase." Yes, showcasing these struggles is an integral part of the art, but flnow focuses on how cool and powerful they are too. This project serves as a reminder to the humanity behind struggle, which we sometimes forget in the face of a hardship which is not our own. March 20, 2017.
